L1 – S1 · Lumbar spine

When the soft centre of a spinal disc pushes out through its outer ring, it can press on a nearby nerve. Many people improve without an operation; a careful assessment tells you which path fits you.

L4 – S1 · Lower lumbar & sacral nerve roots

Sciatica describes pain that travels from the lower back down the back of the leg, along the path of the sciatic nerve. It is a symptom, so the aim is to find what is pressing on the nerve.

L1 – L5 · Lumbar spine

Low back pain is one of the most common reasons people see a doctor. Most episodes settle with time and sensible care; the task is to recognise the few that need closer attention.

Age-related wear of the discs and joints of the lower spine. In some people it narrows the space for the nerves and causes pain in the back or legs.

Wear-related changes in the discs and joints of the neck. It may cause neck pain alone, or press on nerves and the spinal cord and cause symptoms in the arms or hands.

Neck pain is common and usually short-lived. Persistent pain, or pain that travels into the arm with tingling or weakness, should be properly assessed.
